Promising Drug For AIDS Victims

According to a report published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, an experimental cancer drug may help add years to the lives of many AIDS victims by treating the form of pneumonia that is their biggest killer.

The drug is called trimetrexate, and has fewer side effects than drugs now used. The treatment does not cure AIDS, but researchers say successful treatment of pneumocystis could give many AIDS patients extra years of life.

Ron Reagan Featured In AIDS Film

AIDS: Changing The Rules, a onehour special aimed at adult hetersexuals, premieres Friday, November 6 from 10 11 p.m. on most PBS stations. The program opens with a 25 minute film, featuring Ron Reagan (son of President Reagan), model Beverly Johnson, and salsa star Ruben Biades. With sensitivity, candor, an where appropriate -humor, the film lays out the scope of the problem, and suggests steps that individuals can take to minimize the risk of contracting AIDS.

Ron Reagan's involvement has already drawn attention to the film and the issue.. When asked why he had agreed to participate, Reagan responded: "There is a portfolio of names and faces in my mind, people my wife, Doria, and I knew, people whose kindness and hospitality we shared, who lives made ours richer. They are gone now, along with thousands more. I'm grateful for the opportunity." ILLINOIS...

Historic First For Illinois!

On Tuesday, September 8, the Illinois Gay and Lesbian Task Force (IGLTF) became the first lesbian/gay organization in Illinois history to meet with an imcumbant governor. The meeting between four members of the IGLTF and Governor Thompson was held to discuss IGLTF's position on pending AIDS-related legisla-

tion.

This historic meeting was the direct result of the IGLTF's veto effort, the massive grass-roots campaign begun last July in responce to the passage of all the AIDS-related legislation. By the time this appears in print, the Governor will have acted on all, or substantially all of the AIDS-related legislation. The focus will then shift back to the legislature as it attempts to override the Governor's veto of the bad bills, and considers sustaining any amendatory vetoes the Governor may make.
